The Rule of Five!

It’s time to reveal the Secret Project I’ve been working on for the last year or so!

Don Sakers — author and currently Analog’s book reviewer — and I have been friends for many (many!) years. We've always wanted to collaborate on something, but each time we started something, it spun out of control. Both of us are big-canvas writers, who like world-building and backstory and complex casts of characters, and putting two of us together always resulted in sprawling, unwieldy ideas that couldn’t easily be confined to a conventional novel, or even to a series of novels. But with electronic publishing opening up new formats and lengths, it became possible to imagine launching our latest idea as a serial, the kind of serial that would let us create the kind of elaborate, expansive universe more coolly seen in comics. We had the chance to work at the scale our story demanded, without sacrificing character, setting, or idea. We could make The Rule of Five everything we imagined it could be.

Each month, we’ll post an episode with a minimum length of 2000 words — a solid short story. All subscribers will be able to see each month’s episode plus the previous episode; if you subscribe at higher levels, you can get a quarterly ebook compilation, access to all past episodes, and even a print edition containing the completed Season, as well as public acknowledgement for your support. These stories will be hosted at our dedicated website, rule-of-five.com, where you can also find the (open) prelude, as well as various bits of background information about the series. Subscriptions will be handled through Patreon.

At its core, The Rule of Five is classic space opera, a sprawling, interconnected set of stories. What’s it about? Pirates. Judges. Weird physics. Desperate refugees. Struggling colonists. Missing persons and a mystery ship. A quest for human origins in a pocket universe. It’s a journey, a story that will take its characters to the farthest reaches of known space, and to the very core of their being. We hope you’ll join us on the way.

Good luck with this,

I'm not a big reader of shorts but I'll be sure to pick up the end of year/season books

Awesome! We hoped that would catch the folks who'd rather read in larger segments. :-)
